Jane's tribute and general memorial

Created by Penny 15 years ago
Bill was born in Leeds on 23rd November 1961. He had a brother, Alan, and sisters Joan, who sadly died 18 months ago, Jane, Janet, Linda, Marjorie and Brenda. With eight children, there are too many in the extended family now to mention everyone today, but Bill knew that they were there for him, even if he did not see some of them too often. We heard earlier that Bill’s hair as an adult gave him a nickname, but his sister Jane recalls a rather less flattering one when he was a child. His hair took rather a long time to grow, so he was often called ‘coconut’ by his obviously sympathetic family! His other nickname as a child was no better – Wombat! Well, I think we’re getting a picture of his warm and loving family…! Actually they all got on pretty well most of the time as children, but they were always getting into one scrape or another, often, it has to be said, encouraged by Bill. Once, on holiday at The Crow’s Nest, he locked Jane in the toilets and ran away! Joan also used to recount another memorable occasion while they were on holiday when Bill sent her to get some ice creams. On the way she was run over, though fortunately not seriously injured, and while the rest of the family were full of concern, Bill was annoyed that he hadn’t got his ice cream! Later on he spent his holidays working at the Haven Holiday Camp, and also at the Fairhaven in Mablethorpe, where he met Richard, and we will be hearing from him about those days a little later, something of an edited version I suspect, so I will leave those days to him to recount. The family remembers that Bill was always a joker, who loved Leeds United and karaoke, and pool, and darts, and Abba. He often enjoyed a bet on the dogs, and the horses, and he would have smiled to know that Jane picked the winner of the Grand National on Saturday! But there was another side to Bill, the man who was a great friend to so many, and who, in his thirties, ran marathons for charity. Most recently, Bill worked at the Bacchus Hotel as a chef, and I know that some of his colleagues and friends from there are here today. Bill welcomed Jane’s partner Andy into the family six years ago, and the four of them spent a lot of time together. Jane knew that Bill had searched for many years for that one special person, and that he had finally found her in Penny. Their time together was to be short, but very happy.
