Richard's tribute to Bill

Created by Penny 15 years ago
I was asked by Penny to say a few words about Bill. She asked me to make it humorous, so, like all good tabloid newspapers, I’m here to dish the dirt on Bill - except there is no dirt. He was a straightforward guy, always happy to see you and good for a laugh. He had a wicked sense of humour, and this was the subject of the tale I have to tell from when we first knew each other. We used to DJ, but when I picked him up he was never ready, so Janet would shout up the stairs: ‘WILLIAM!!!’ I found out that he really hated this, and so every time he was late I would get Janet to shout up, just to wind him up! He found out and took his revenge that same night. We would DJ at a singles bar, and every night a large, Amazonian-type woman would ask me to dance. I would make my excuses and Bill would back me up, only this night he didn’t, and she dragged up onto the floor, with Bill laughing his head off behind me! He was also a champion tidier; the only problem was, you could never find anything after he’d tidied! He was a devout Leeds United fan, which was probably the reason for his grey hair, but his ashes are going to be scattered on their ground, so he will finally get his season ticket. I could almost hear Bill saying: “ Play: ‘Marching On Together’ as we leave today!” He actually said that Penny was his perfect woman, and he rated her as a 9.5. When I asked why only 9.5, he replied: “She’s a Forest supporter!” He loved his two girls, and Penny and Christina were his life; all Bill ever wanted was to settle down and become a Dad, and he did both. Over the past week Penny has, in my eyes, proved a definite ‘10’. My own children call my brothers by their names, but Bill was always ‘Uncle Bill’. But most of all, he was a friend. A DJ’s aim is to make his audience remember his performance by the music he plays. I hope every time you hear this next song, you think of Bill; the title and the lyrics reflect my thoughts and my love for my friend. It’s James Taylor, with: ‘You’ve Got A Friend.’
